PostHeaderIcon Product Review: Kool-Aid Fun Fizz

Kool-Aid has come out with a very cool new product, Fun Fizz drink drops. They’re sugar free, sweetened with aspartame, fizzy, and fun. They’re perfect for putting into water bottles or in children’s water to get the to drink it. However, if I may, if you have to add cool aid that fizzes to your child’s water to get them to drink it, you’ve got bigger problems then we’ll be addressing here.

Anyway, these fizzy drops are getting reviews all over the web and the consensus is that they are a super cool addition to the sugar free drink flavoring market.

The claim: Fun Fizz drink drops quickly bubble and sparkle into a refreshing, non-carbonated beverage that makes kids excited to drink water. The drops are convenient and mess free and designed to fit into the opening of a standard water bottle. The sugar-free, 5-calorie drink comes in three flavors — Partyin’ Punch, Gigglin’ Grape and laughin’ Lemonade.

Cost: $1.99 for a package of eight

Where: Supermarkets

Fun Fizz comes in 3 awesome flavors—Partyin’ Punch, Gigglin’ Grape, and Laughin’ Lemonade. They do indeed live up to the claims Kool-Aid makes. They do fit in a water bottle and they do bubble and sparkle like rainbow alka seltzer.  These guys are a ton of fun to watch, but watch out, they are very sweet! Overwhelmingly sweet!

The great part about making Kool-Aid on your own, as Junk Food Betty points out, is that you control the sweetness. Here you’re stuck with what you’ve got. I like them for every now and then, try them and tell me what you think.

PostHeaderIcon KFC Double Down Fever!

KFC's Double Down Sandwich looks delicious in this photo supplied by KFC.

Man! Everyone on the planet is talking about this new sandwich. If you haven’t heard of it yet, and I find that hard to believe since it’s been reported on everywhere I turn, it’s the new creation from Kentucky Fried Chicken.

The sandwich consists of two fried or grilled chicken breasts sandwiching cheese, bacon, and sauce. No bread! This fits right in with your healthy low-carb lifestyle and the double down customer reviews are positive so far. However, the sandwich seems to be releasing in specific markets. If you’re in Canada you won’t see this sandwich on the menu, and it hasn’t gotten to places like Toronto just yet.

Some are outraged by such an offering deeming it ‘The Heart Attack Sandwich”, which makes me laugh. The nutritional information for this little sandwich is quite impressive coming in at 540 calories and 10 net carbs for the fried version and 460 calories and 3 net carbs for the grilled version. This is close to the same calorie count you’d find of most sandwiches on a fast food menu. Nothing has changed here people, there is just no bread on this one. Sounds great to me, now if KFC could just get in to buying free-range chickens instead of chickens with enormous breasts that have never seen the sun.

I’ll definitely be trying this sandwich on for size, so look for my review. In the mean time, here’s a live action review of the sandwich.

PostHeaderIcon Let’s Talk Tea

In my attempt to kick all artificial sweeteners out of my life, or at the very least, aspartame and sugar alcohols. I’ve had to explore other options in the beverage department.  No more diet soda for me, but I’ve been hearing all kinds of great things about all kinds of great teas.

Now, I live in Arizona where it’s usually a bit too hot to be drinking tea. At least hot tea, so I thought I would experiment with iced tea. If you can drink herbal tea while it’s hot, why not drink it over ice?

PostHeaderIcon Low-Carb, Gluten-Free Banana Nut Bread

Lauren over at Healthy Indulgences is a wizard when it comes to low carb substitutions, especially the sweet ones! If you haven’t checked out her site and sampled some of her recipes, get your buns over there!

I used her Healthy Banana Nut Muffins recipe to make banana nut bread recently and it was wonderful. Tasted just like the real thing! I used almonds instead of the other nuts she suggests and kept the rest of the recipe the same, but instead of baking it in muffin tins I used a loaf pan. The bread was so moist and squishy, I’m sold on coconut flour! I made a second batch using a bunch of frozen mixed berries instead of bananas and it was just as delicious.

Coconut flour is a great alternative to other grain based flours. It is so versatile and gives you the perfect texture for baked goods. You can even use it to batter some of your favorite fried foods like onion rings, fried zucchini, and chicken nuggets. It can also be used as a filler where you would normally use cracker or bread crumbs in meat balls and meatloaf.

PostHeaderIcon Online Weightloss Journal Reviews

All weightloss plans require you to log your food intake so you can see exactly what goes in and what needs cutting. Whether you’re tracking fat, calories, or carbohydrates, you need to know where to start and where to look when the scale isn’t moving in the right direction. There are a plethora of websites available for just this activity. So how do you figure out which one of the million online weightloss journals or food log sites is the best for you?

Well, I’ve tried a few, here are my thoughts.

Fat Secret

No bones about it, FatSecret is my favorite!

Not only can I enter all the food I’ve eaten in a day or plan for the next day, but there are forums, recipes, groups, a journal, and tons more great tools. You can even log in from your Blackberry, iPhone, or Android phone. Think of this as a FaceBook for people looking to lose weight. I hear it’s similar to SparkPeople, thought I’ve never checked this one out.

PostHeaderIcon What’s in Your Fridge?

Everyone seems to be sharing what’s in their fridge these days. I see posts about refrigerator contents everywhere, there are whole sites dedicated to the topic, and there is even a flickr group all about what is in your fridge. I’m even seeing this stuff in contest form on health related sites.

A fellow low-carb blogger by the name of Lindsey has decided to show us the insides of her fridge. She’s stocked with lots of low-carb goodies! Check it out, the low-carb fridge!
