Low-Carb, Paleo, and Food Allergy Friendly Restaurant Recommendations
Sticking to a diet of only healthy, nourishing food is tough when we’re surrounded by poisonous things. It’s even tougher at in the wild away from home. Restaurants can be a war zone, especially if you suffer from food allergies.
I’ve been on a mission since my food allergy diagnosis to find restaurants that are suitable for a low-carb or paleo lifestyle and are sensitive to food allergies. We need options like everyone else and it’s not always practical to be prepared.
This is the list of restaurants I love and highly recommend, this list will especially come in handy for those who are new to this way of eating or have recently discovered they suffer from food allergies.
–Fast Food Options–
This sub shop is one of my favorite quick lunches, they will make any sandwich ‘unwich’ style wrapped in lettuce. They are pretty good at getting special orders right and they deliver! You can also order online in many areas, which is a bonus.
Check out their menu, my favorites include the #9 Italian Nightclub and the JJ Gargantuan. Hold the cheese of course.
Chipotle is a great choice for a quick on-the-go lunch, take out, or even a sit down deal. One of the reasons I really like Chipotle is that they pride themselves on ‘Food with Integrity’. They are committed to finding the best ingredients with respect to animals, the environment, and farmers. Which means they source local and organic as often as they can and use hormone free happy meats as often as they can.
Chipotle is also a really great setup that allows each customer to completely customize their meal. The set up is burrito bar style so you move down an assembly line of ingredients and add only what you’d like. They also have a fabulous online ordering system that is super easy and convenient, they even have a mobile app!
Check out their menu, my favorite is a salad with barbacoa, tomato salsa, tomatillo-green salsa, and guacamole. Sometimes I’ll do a bowl and sub the fajita veggies in for rice and beans.
In-N-Out is a super easy stop for an on-the-go lunch or quick meal when you’re away from home and starving. In-N-Out has a ‘Not So Secret Menu’, which includes a burger preparation called ‘Protein Style’ or lettuce wrapped instead of the bun.
They are also very good with super complicated special orders, for example I get the following: triple meat, protein style, no cheese, ketchup and mustard instead of spread, add pickle, with onion. They consistently get this right no matter which location I go to, which is really awesome. I also really like my burger ‘animal style’ and will get that often!
If you want fries and have a gluten allergy you’re completely safe as they only fry potatoes at this burger joint. No cross contamination in the oil from frying other wheat poisoned items.
–Sit Down Options–
Red Robin is on of the most food allergy sensitive restaurants I’ve found. They do a fantastic job with a full gluten-free menu available online. They also add an allergy alert to your ticket when you order to let the kitchen know to change gloves and use a fresh pan to cook your food.
Red Robin also offers a ‘protien style’ or lettuce wrapped preparation for any of their sandwiches and burgers, making it super easy to skip the bread and you can order take-out for a cozy night at home if you’re not in the mood to sit down in the restaurant.
These are my faves and regular choices. I’d love to know what your favorite restaurants are. Go ahead and leave your recommendations and reviews in the comments!
