what to do when temptation strikesTaking on the challenge of a diet is a difficult thing, but when you are trying to make a permanent change in lifestyle, the task becomes even more daunting. It seems that at every corner there are potential pitfalls, and sometimes it just becomes too much to take. Do not feel as though you are alone, because everyone succumbs to the temptation at some point or another. What you do after the temptation matters most, and getting back on track is the important thing. Spending time beating yourself up over having a weak moment will not accomplish anything. The best thing you can do is concentrate on getting back on track.

I have had the pleasure of asking several of my friends what tempts them the most, and more importantly, what they do to get back on target and overcome temptation. This is what they had to say;

Carroll M. from Western Kentucky:

For me it is the daily thing that I never gave a second thought before I started the diet. It is things like the box of donuts in the break room in the morning, the smell of fresh bread baking at my sister’s house, and my mother in-laws lasagna. I won’t lie. It is hard not to want to eat all of these things, but what keeps me going in the right direction is my kids and husband. Knowing that choosing to live the Paleo lifestyle is going to make us all healthier makes fighting the battles worthwhile.

Understanding the long-term benefits of a healthier lifestyle, and focusing on them is what helps keep Carroll balanced and fighting to stay on the diet.

Brian R. from ASouthern Louisiana:

I think the hardest thing for me are those people who think they are suddenly nutrition experts telling me that this diet isn’t going to work, and yet I have lost 33 lbs. in the past 90 days. I have done my research, and I have spoken to a nutritionist. Even she told me that you can’t argue the success I have had. I feel better now at 46 than I did in my twenties, and watching the weight come off is my motivation.

Tracking your personal success will help keep you focused and inspired to keep pushing forward.

Cynthia H. from Colorado:

I think that the hardest part for me is restaurants. There are so few where you can find anything that follows the Paleo diet. I no longer get to socialize with my co-workers at lunchtime, and have really found that my friends don’t call as much because the restaurants that do offer Paleo food they don’t want to go to. Thank goodness for the Facebook page from Paleo. There is always someone there I can talk to.

Creating your own support network helps make following the diet easier and enjoyable.

Theresa B. from Mississippi:

Pizza! Pizza is the hardest thing for me to pass up is pizza. Well, that and an ice-cold coke. Fortunately, there are plenty of tasty and nourishing Paleo food available. I can eat a good meal and walk away feeling completely satisfied and full. Although I still want my coke and pizza, having plenty of alternative choices does make staying on the diet easier.

Having plenty of good choices that keep you on your diet is key to help fight the cravings.

After speaking to some of my fellow dieters, I realized that we all struggle with fighting the cravings. I also got several excellent tips on how to stay focused and remain on track;

· Remember the long-term positive effects of healthier eating
· Track your personal success
· Create a support system
· Keep plenty of good choices on hand

Whether it is the Paleo diet or any other one, battling cravings is always a difficult. With a little encouragement from your friends and family, watching the positive effects of the diet, keeping good food on hand, most importantly, remember the long-term effect on your overall health, staying on course will be a little easier.
